Nineteenth-Century Tales from Northern England
Given half a chance your typical northerner will be more than willing to tell you a tale – mind you, it’ll probably cost you a pint or two of ale. In forty years of journalism in Yorkshire I’ve heard plenty of stories…many of them embellished, based on rumour, totally fictitious or even, in a few cases, actually true. The tales I retell here help paint a picture of northern working class life during this period of the industrial revolution. They are based on published work of writers of the time, many of them pioneers in dialect writing.

Hi Paul,
I have read your delightful ramblings on Yorkshire surnames, which I find elucidating. I descend fro Jessops and the like.
I et, while looking for a property, a young Yorkshireman working for an estate agent in London.
Being a linguist, genealogist and historian I was intrigued by his very unusual surname… Which I have conveniently forgotten. It was such an unusual name I did a search on it about 7 years ago. I remember the details of my search, though. It turned out that people bearing his name are all very closely related (no more than 4th cousins) and come from a small area in Yorkshire. A little bit like the name Hobhouse, where all those named as such are my cousins from 1st cousins to 4th. I will try to find this yorkshire name in my notes and send it on to you
I’ve just come across your unsurpassable collections of Dales photographs. They fill my heart, a much-loved aunt of mine was a Denby Dale lass, I had a small taste of Swaledale and Coverdale many years back during a fortnight’s furlough with a team of young and very good amateur actors from Mexborough, and I’ve been six years compiling a study of the hand-woolcombers.
